At first we were silent, for we did not know how to talk about it. As we walked along the harbor, Mr. Bingley rolled his shoulders.

“Well, that was the most unpleasant welcome to a country that I have ever had in my life.”

And then we all began to talk about it.

Bingley assured us that he didn't have such a conflict at all when he had previously come to America and that his time amongst the locals had always been quite pleasant. When Bingley went off to purchase our tickets for our next voyage, we all began to speak of it with more heated words.

“The man was wounded,” Jane said, “From having experienced a tragedy that had a marked effect on him. He was waiting to find someone to lash out at and therefore, though he was very wrong to attack us, I cannot help but still pity him for his pain.”

“Oh Jane, you are too good,” Kitty sighed, “Can you never think ill of anyone?”

“Not in circumstances such as this.”

“The man is to be pitied,” Kitty acknowledged, “When I have had more time to think about it. And when I say by more time, I mean tomorrow and certainly not today. “Yes he was,” I said, “a capital offense.”

Darcy was silent all the while and I placed my hand on his cheek.

“You and Bingley defended us valiantly,” I offered.

“I am sorry that you had to witness such a sight,” Darcy said shortly, “I am very much bitter.”

“And I am happy in some ways,” I replied lightly, “For though I hope the rest of our time in America may go by without such incidents, it was a nice trial for you.”

“A trial?”

“Yes, for it has shown me, that when a woman is offended, you will defend us, and that you are not afraid to defend yourself as well. Such pride is well-placed, and if I may be so bold, is under good regulation—therefore it shows that you have real superiority of mind.”

“Are you teasing me in hopes of making me smile?”

“Yes and no. I am being playful, but I mean every word.”

My sisters also offered our thanks, and then Mr. Bingley returned with our tickets, telling us that we had four hours still before we would be able to board the ship.

The four hours, as long as they felt to be, eventually came to a close and we were boarding the courier ship The Laconia. Our luggage
